Eye Doctor Scranton

At the Northeastern Eye Institute, located in the scenic Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazelton area of Pennsylvania, numerous eye conditions and diseases are treated at our state-of-the-art facility that houses 36 examination rooms, a surgical center, and an optical laboratory, just to name a few of our special features.

Just some of the most common conditions we treat at NEI are:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia) is a very common vision condition in which you can see objects that are near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. The degree of your nearsightedness determines your focusing ability. People with severe myopia can see clearly only objects just a few inches away from them, while people with mild nearsightedness may clearly see objects that are several yards away. Nearsightedness may develop gradually or it may develop fairly rapidly, often worsening during childhood and adolescence, and this vision problem tends to run in families. A basic eye exam at NEI will confirm whether or not you have myopia, and the condition can easily be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery.
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia) is also a very common vision condition in which you can see objects in the distance quite clearly but nearby objects are blurry. People who are farsightedness have eyes that are too short from front to back, causing light rays to be focused behind rather than on the back of the eye (the retina). The degree of your farsightedness determines your ability to focus. Severely farsighted people are able to see clearly only objects that are a great distance from their eyes. If you are mildly farsighted, you may be able to see objects clearly that are closer to you. This condition is usually present at birth and tends to run in families. A basic eye exam at NEI will confirm whether or not you suffer from farsightedness, and this can be corrected with eyeglass, contact lenses or surgery.
  • Astigmatism is a mild and easily treatable imperfection in the curvature of your eye; this condition can cause blurred vision. This condition occurs when the front surface of your eye (the cornea) has a slightly different surface curvature in one direction from the other, and instead of being even and smooth in all directions, the surface may have some areas that are flatter or steeper. When the cornea has a distorted shape, you have a corneal astigmatism, and when the lens is distorted, you have lenticular astigmatism. Either type can caused blurred vision. Astigmatism is very common and affects most people to some degree, but it’s often not pronounced enough to require corrective action. When it does need correction, corrective lenses or surgery are options.
  • Presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus actively on nearby objects; this condition usually develops after your turn 40 years old. Most people become aware that they have presbyopia when they start needing to hold print at arm’s length to read it. A basic eye exam at NEI will diagnose presbyopia, and it can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

If you think you may have one of these eye conditions, please contact NEI today to schedule your initial appointment. We serve patients in the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazelton areas of northeastern Pennsylvania.
